FAQs

Renting a motorhome can come with lots of questions. We understand this. That’s why we have put together this helpful list of questions and answers. Hopefully these will answer any questions you may have.*

  • Booking our Chausson C656 is very simple. Go to our booking page, and select the dates you wish. Fill out the form and choose any optional extras that you would like to add to your booking. Your total will be shown throughout the process. What you see is what you will pay. At Rent a Motorhome NI, there are no hidden charges or surprises that we will add to your booking.

Once you are happy with your booking, simply go to checkout. At this stage you don’t have to pay the full amount, but you can if you wish. You will however be required to pay the booking deposit of 25% of the total cost of the hire to secure the motorhome.

You don’t have to pay the full balance until 4 weeks prior to your pick-up date, but you can pay it off at anytime up until then, and we strongly recommend you do so.

And that’s it. Simple. Then all you have to do is start to plan your motorhome adventure.

  • The booking deposit is 25% of the total hire cost and is payable upon checkout at the booking stage. This will ensure that the motorhome is reserved exclusively for you on the dates you wish. Please note, the booking deposit is non-refundable.

  • The security deposit is a refundable £1000 to cover any damage caused to the vehicle and/or its contents while in your possession. It is the amount that is set out in the excesses in our insurance policy. This is payable by credit card or debit card and is refunded to you upon the safe return of the motorhome.

There are two options for payment – either pay the £1000 in full as part of the total amount at booking, or instead, you can opt to have it as a hold as an open security payment on your credit or debit card. No money will be taken from your account with this option, but the money is held in the event that we require it. If you are using a debit card, please ensure there are sufficient funds available to cover the hold, otherwise it may not authorise. It is to be authorised 1 day prior to collection (no sooner) of the motorhome. If the security deposit is not either paid or authorised by this time, then booking will be cancelled, the cancellation fees will apply and the motorhome will be available for hire by someone else. Pre-paid currency cards cannot be accepted and cheques cannot be used against the Security Deposit.

Should the motorhome be returned to us in an unsatisfactory condition which requires remedial action by us before we can hire it out again, or if there are missing items, then we will deduct from the Security Deposit any amounts due to get it back to a roadworthy and rental condition. Should any damages exceed the Security Deposit held, then you will be liable for the total cost and we will be in contact with you about paying the difference, as set out in our Terms and Conditions.

Should the vehicle be returned in a satisfactory condition, then we will refund the £1000 back to you if you opted to pay it in full. If you chose to keep it as a hold, it will be automatically released by our bank within 7 working days. The Security Deposit cannot be refunded immediately upon return of the motorhome as we have to perform our post-hire vehicle checks prior to release.

  • We are based in Waringstown, County Armagh. To give you an idea of travelling times, we are about 30 minutes away from Belfast, 60 minutes from Newcastle and about 90 minutes away from Portrush and Portstewart. Dublin is about 90 minutes in the opposite direction and a trip to Donegal from Waringstown will take you roughly 2 hours and a half hours.

  • We need to conduct ID checks for our insurer. To do this, we ask that you email us the following information, no later than 48 hours before your hire date:

    (1) A photo/scan of the main driver's photo card drivers’ licence (and second driver's if you have chosen this as an optional extra). Please note, the address and licence must be up to date.

    (2) A photo/scan of two proofs of address from two of the following:

    • Electricity bill

    • Gas bill

    • Broadband/Landline bill

    • Council tax

    • TV licence

    • Bank Statement

    • Credit card bill / statement

    • Mortgage statement

    • Polling card

    • HMRC self-assessment / tax credit

    • Student loan

    • Shotgun licence

    • Payslip

    • Mobile Phone bill

    • Pension letters

    • Car Finance Statement

    • Loan Statement

    • Property deed

*Both must be dated within 90 days of the hire date. The name and address on your licence must match both documents.

  • We know a few…but this island is bursting with new, undiscovered treasures, just waiting to be found by you, your family and friends. Go and explore and see what you can find.

We can recommend some very good apps that you may find useful. They give some great information about stop off points, where you can park up for the night and things to see/do around Ireland. Please note, we are in no way affiliated with any of these sites/apps and cannot control the content of what they produce.

    • Search for Sites app

    • Campercontact app

    • Park4night app

There is also a book in the motorhome library called Road Trip Ireland - The Ultimate Guide to Ireland and the Atlantic Way. This gives lots of information about where to go, where to park and what to look out for on this beautiful island.

  • Stay calm! First, check that everyone involved is ok. Your safety and the welfare of your passengers, and other road users are your first priority. Assuming that everyone is ok, then you should do the following:

    • Notify us of the accident/incident asap.

    • Obtain the names and addresses of third parties and any witnesses, report the event to the nearest police station and get a police incident number.

    • For clarity, the PSNI guidance on when to report following a road traffic collision is as follows:

      Reportable:

When damage is caused to anything other than the vehicle or its contents (including another vehicle, property boundaries or street furniture such as lamp posts or street signs) or when injury is caused to anyone other than the driver of the vehicle or any animal not in or on the vehicle. An animal is defined by law as a horse, cattle, ass, mule, sheep, pig, goat or dog.

      Non-Reportable:

When damage is only caused to the vehicle involved or injury is limited to the driver involved or any animal carried in or on the vehicle.

    • Complete an accident report in writing.

    • If the accident occurs in Europe, then in addition you must complete the European accident report form as supplied.

    • Don’t make any admission of liability to other parties, settlement offer or other like offer.

    • If the damage isn’t bad enough to need to return the motorhome to us, then continue with your holiday and try to put it out of your head and relax and enjoy the rest of your holiday! The damage can and will be fixed. Don’t let it ruin your well deserved holiday or break away.

  • No, you don’t have to pay for it all at once. If you wish to do so, you certainly can, but there is no expectation to do so at checkout. You will however be required to pay a non-fundable 25% deposit to secure the motorhome at checkout.

After this, you can log into your account at anytime to make further payments. If it helps to break it down into monthly instalments, you can certainly do so. As long as you pay off the balance by the due date, (4 weeks prior to your pick up date), we don’t mind how you decide to pay.

  • Yes, plenty! Here’s our Top Ten Motorhome Holiday Tips. These are drawn from our own experience, as well as the experience of others:

    (1) Have a rough idea of where you want to go if you are wild camping, and try to get there before it gets dark!

    (2) Have a Plan B as a back up, in case Plan A doesn’t work out - there may be someone already at the spot that you had planned to park at, or the car park you thought you could stop over in has just erected a height restrictor.

    (3) Plan your water top ups and toilet disposals. You definitely don’t want to run out of water while you are in the shower, and you certainly don’t want to be driving around with a full-to-the-brim toilet cassette!

    (4) Bring some things to keep yourself occupied, in case the weather doesn’t play ball.

    (5) Have a rough idea of what you are going to do for food each day.

    (6) If you pass another motorhome on the road, be sure to give them a friendly wave. It’s the unwritten etiquette rule of motorhoming!

    (7) Understand that a motorhome takes up quite a bit of space on the road and in a carpark. Give yourself, and others, plenty of room, and be considerate to other road users.

    (8) Get used to people staring, pointing, smiling and trying to get a sneaky peak through the door or windows as they walk past. And be ready to talk about it with complete strangers. A motorhome can often generate a lot of interest and curiosity with people.

    (9) If you have stopped in a café or restaurant, or are parked near some public toilets, make sure everyone goes to the toilet before leaving!

    (10) Enjoy every single minute of it. Our philosophy is Adventure; Discovery; Freedom. That’s not just a catchy line for the website. We genuinely mean it. We believe that holidaying in a motorhome allows to go on a real adventure with your family and friends, discovering new places and experiencing new things that you otherwise wouldn’t, and enjoying the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

  • No, it’s really just like driving a much bigger car! Our Chausson C656 is actually really easy to drive. It has a very smooth manual gear box which is powered by a 130bhp engine. If you have driven a van before, then you’ll find it a breeze as it is based on a Fiat Ducato van base.

However, having said that, it is 7m long, 2.3m wide and 3.1m high so it is considerably bigger than your typical hatchback or family saloon. A motorhome takes up quite a bit of space on the road and in a carpark. Give yourself, and others, plenty of room, and be considerate to other road users. Remember, you won’t fit through spaces that you ordinarily would in your car. And when it comes to going round a corner, take it nice and wide, otherwise you will end up cutting the corner and possibly damaging the whole side of the motorhome.

Here at Rent a Motorhome NI, we have tried to make the driving experience as easy as possible for you, so our Chausson C656 comes equipped with 2 HD rear facing and reversing cameras. The rear facing camera is on all the time while driving, so you can see what is behind you at all times. It’s just like looking in the rear view mirror in your car. We have also fitted front and rear parking sensors to make parking that little bit easier. It also comes equipped with large wing mirrors on each side which have a blind spot lens on them.

So hopefully, with all this help, you should be able to see what is around you and find driving it an absolute doddle!

Also, something to be aware of - there are different speed limits for driving a motorhome than there are for a car. As our Chausson C656 is 3.5 tonnes, it is subject to lower speed limits, as set out in the Highway Code. Therefore, the speed limits for our Chausson C656 motorhome are as follows:

    • 30mph for built-up areas

    • 50mph for single-carriageways (or normal roads)

    • 60mph on dual-carriageways

    • 70mph on a motorway

It would be advisable to memorise these as Rent a Motorhome NI will not be liable for any speeding offences or tickets you incur whilst the motorhome is rented by you.

  • No, I’m afraid Rent a Motorhome NI operates a strict no pets policy.

  • No, Rent a Motorhome NI operates a STRICT NO SMOKING and ILLEGAL DRUGS policy in our motorhome which includes the use of vapes, e-cigarettes, and illegal substances, such as Cannabis.

If your wish to smoke, you must not smoke in the vehicle or directly outside or around the vehicle where smoke and smells may enter the vehicle.

We reserve the right to impose additional Valeting and/or Upholstery cleaning fees should there be evidence of drug use, a smell of smoke or smell of Cannabis detected in the motorhome upon return. This fee will be deducted for the Security Deposit.

  • Collection time is between 1pm and 2pm.

Return time is between 12pm and 1pm.

  • Yes, of course. We offer an early pick up option. Rates are charged at £10 per hour early. Simply choose the Early Collection Time Package at the booking stage.

We also offer a later drop-off time. Rates are charged at £10 per additional hour. Simply choose the Later Drop Off Package at the booking stage.

  • Yes, absolutely! Remember our foundational philosophy? Adventure. Discovery. Freedom. We want you to have the freedom to go wherever you want to go. While Northern Ireland has some wonderful hidden gems to discover, there are many more to find across the entire island of Ireland. We encourage you to go on an adventure of discovery in search of them.

The same can also be said for Europe. Our insurance also extends to Europe. However, please note the following if you are intending to travel into Europe (excluding the Republic of Ireland):

Travelling into Europe (excluding the Republic of Ireland) will incur an additional charge of £100 to cover the European roadside assistance cost. European Cover is mandatory, and you will be in breach of our Terms and Conditions should you take the motorhome into Europe without taking out the additional European Cover Package. You can add this throughout the booking process.

The following countries are covered by the European Travel Insurance:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland (including Liechtenstein), Sweden.

If you intend to visit one of these countries, you must notify us prior to picking up the motorhome. We need to be informed at least 7 days in advance if you are intending to travel outside of Ireland so we can provide written consent for your journey which may be needed at border crossings.

It is also advisable to take out separate personal accident/travel insurance if you intend on travelling outside of the UK and Ireland.

  • There are VERY strict rules around this, so it is really important that you follow them carefully.

Toilet cassette/waste is essentially raw sewage and so it must be treated as such. You CANNOT dispose of this down a normal drain or over a ditch. It must only be disposed of in a specific waste disposal area which can be found on campsites/caravan parks. Alternatively, you can take it to a public toilet (or a residential toilet if someone is kind enough to let you use theirs) and flush it down the toilet.

Waste wate (sometimes called ‘grey water’) is slightly easier. It is the water that drains out of the sinks and shower. It is NOT raw sewage, so it can be safely disposed of down a drain. Simply drive over a drain and release the waste water valve and it will drain out. Be sure to close the valve again before driving off.

  • This is probably one of the most common questions asked about motorhoming. The truth is no, it’s not that bad at all. It’s not the most pleasant job in the world, but it really isn’t as bad as people think. Plus, here at Rent a Motorhome NI, we provide free gloves, face masks and hand sanitiser with your rental, just to make the job that little bit more bearable for the person nominated for toilet-emptying duty!

A top tip if you really don’t fancy this job is to use public toilets where possible. If you are out and about in a town or village and there are public toilets, then why not use them? Or if you have stopped at a café or restaurant for a bite to eat, make sure everyone goes to the toilet before leaving.

Depending on how many people are in your group and how often the toilet is used, it is advisable to empty the toilet cassette once per day. A light will illuminate on the toilet to let you know when it is full and in need of emptying.

  • Well, yes and no! The beauty of a motorhome holiday is tha you have the freedom to go wherever you want. However, there are certain rules and regulations around where you can and cannot park up. For example, you cannot park on someone’s property or driveway, unless they have given you permission to do so. You also cannot block access to properties, or park somewhere where you are blocking pedestrian access.

Also, some councils have rules in place about staying overnight in places such as car parks. These are usually clearly indicated on signs. It is really important, for your sake, as well as for the sake of our business, that you don’t park in one of these places. Remember, our branding is al over the motorhome, so it is important you follow the rules carefully.

But, in general, you can park most places. However, please do remember to leave a place the way you found it, if not better. Don’t leave litter around, don’t dispose of your waste water or toilet cassette somewhere where you shouldn’t, and be mindful of noise levels if there are residents nearby.

  • From time to time, we will release a discount code for a specific period of time. The best way to find these is to subscribe to our social media channels. That way, you will know what the code or offer is and when it is valid from/to.

  • We strongly recommend that you take out an appropriate Travel Insurance Policy as soon as possible after booking, to protect your holiday in the case of cancellation. We also strongly advise you to read through our Terms and Conditions carefully before booking, especially the section on our Cancellation policy.

You may cancel your booking up to 7 days prior to pick up date. We will charge a cancellation administration fee of £50.00 for any cancellation. Cancellations made 6 days or less prior to your pickup date will be charged at 50% of the total booking amount, in addition to the cancellation fee.

To cancel, you must inform us by a clear statement via email to bookings@rentamotorhomeni.co.uk, or by using the contact details on the booking form on our website.

Should you not turn up on the first day of the hire period to collect the motorhome and have not communicated to us prior to this date in writing that you will not be collecting it or intend to collect on an alternative date/time within the booked hire period, then we will consider this booking as a ‘No Show’.

In the case of a ‘No Show’, the booking will automatically be cancelled at close of business that day and the vehicle will be released for re-hire. All deposits paid are non-refundable and no refunds whatsoever will be due for No Shows.

We also reserve the right to cancel the hire if at the commencement of hire the driver/s licenses are invalid or not according to the conditions set out. In these circumstances the total hire charge will be forfeited. Hirers are strongly advised to insure against unavoidable cancellation.

  • Yes, of course. You are welcome to leave your vehicle(s) on the property driveway for the duration of your hire, so long as you understand that you do so at your own risk.

We may request that your keys are left with us in case we need to move your vehicle in an emergency.

But please note, we will not be held liable for any theft of/from the vehicle or damage to the vehicle whilst on our driveway.

*Answers to most questions should be found in our terms and conditions. We suggest you take time to read through these carefully before booking with us. These FAQs are simply a summary of some of the main terms and conditions. They do not constitute our full terms and conditions and should in no way be considered as such.
